About Lopwell Barn

Lopwell Barn is a residential centre just 10 miles from Plymouth sitting on the banks of the picturesque River Tavy. A stone’s throw from Lopwell Dam, the barn was converted into a bunk house in 1999 when it was used as an overnight stop for travelling through the county.

Families for Children acquired the Barn as a residential resource in 2019 and continue to promote it as a place where young people can come to relax, reflect and engage in outdoor activities and adventure either with their families, peers, school or as individuals.

About Families for Children

Families for Children have been supporting adoptive families for over 25 years. Our support services have been developed to help support children (and their families) to deal with the effects of trauma that many of them have suffered in their early lives. We understand the impact that their early experiences can have on their development and we are able to offer advice, therapy and guidance in dealing with the difficulties that they may face in everyday life.

As a specialist adoption charity our knowledge and expertise in supporting young adopted people and their families enables us to develop and provide therapeutic services. Services that can help individuals develop their confidence, learn new skills and explore their identity and what it means to be adopted.

The work we provide through our adoption support service is vitally important to so many of our adopted children and their families and is a unique service. This support is available when, and for as long as, it is needed. At any one time we are supporting around 150 families with these services.

As a charity, Families for Children has to raise over £350,000 per year to be able to provide our adoption support services. This work is the main focus of our fundraising activities each year.

We are so grateful to the many trusts, community groups, businesses and individuals who help us to achieve this level of fundraising. Your support really does make a difference to a child’s life.

Who uses Lopwell Barn?

During the week the barn is used to develop youth focussed one-to-one and group activities. These activities will link in with our wider therapeutic interventions and to develop therapeutic residential opportunities for families. The space enables us to work with our therapists and a parallel process to work with children and young people doing outdoor programmes which could include bushcraft, paddle boarding, kayaking, woodworking and many other activities.

Lopwell Barn is an ideal venue for us to be able to offer specialist training for adoptive parents or professionals as well as a weekend retreat for our families.

The models we have used for adoption support can additionally be used across other forms of permanence such as Special Guardianship and Long Term Fostering – so if you are interested in seeing what you could access the Barn for, get in touch.
